Unwanted Hair Loss
It’s completely normal to lose 50–100 hairs each day. However, when hair loss exceeds this range, it may lead to visible changes such as thinning patches, a receding hairline, or a widening parting. This condition—commonly referred to as alopecia—can present as overall thinning, isolated bald spots, or more widespread hair loss. In some cases, hair loss is temporary, often triggered by factors such as stress, illness, weight changes, or nutritional deficiencies, and may resolve on its own. However, other types—such as male or female pattern baldness—are often genetic and may require active treatment to see improvement. People may notice hair loss through increased shedding during brushing, more hair on pillows, or by visibly seeing changes in their hairline or scalp density.
Hair Loss in Men and Women. Male pattern baldness typically affects the top of the scalp, often beginning with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown. It is a hereditary condition that can be passed down from either parent and may begin as early as the late teens. The rate and extent of hair loss vary, with some individuals experiencing gradual thinning over decades and others seeing more rapid progression.
Female pattern hair loss—also known as androgenic alopecia—is also genetic and most commonly presents as diffuse thinning at the crown or along the parting, while the sides and back generally remain unaffected. In some cases, women may notice a receding hairline or thinning at the temples. Beyond genetics, hair loss in women may also result from stress, hormonal imbalances, medical conditions such as thyroid disorders or lupus, nutritional deficiencies, certain medications, or external factors like traction from tight hairstyles (traction alopecia) or habitual hair pulling (trichotillomania).
If you’re experiencing hair loss—especially with itching, burning, or sudden clumps shedding—consult a doctor to exclude underlying conditions.
For genetic hair loss (male or female pattern), early treatment is crucial. These progressive conditions worsen if untreated, so starting early can slow or stabilise loss and sometimes promote regrowth. Delaying often leads to further decline.
